With inflation, supply chain challenges, and general living costs, everyone could use some relief at checkout. There are seven grocery stores noted for helping customers stretch their dollars without sacrificing taste.
1. Lidl: Discount Giant with a European Twist
Lidl is gaining traction in the US, particularly in New York, where it has been expanding. The store’s design, influenced by its European roots, allows for reduced staffing and an efficient warehouse format, which helps keep prices low for shoppers. Interestingly, 81.4% of Lidl’s customers return due to the store’s value. Besides typical grocery items, shoppers can also find seasonal goods and even unexpected products like power tools.
2. Winco Foods: Wholesale Prices – No Membership
Winco Foods is an employee-owned chain known for its budget-friendly prices, operating without membership fees. Its warehouse model reduces costs by minimizing intermediaries—customers even bag their own groceries. An impressive 73.1% of customers visit often because they see great value, especially in bulk items like flour and rice.
3. Grocery Outlet: Where Discounts Meet Discovery
Grocery Outlet specializes in selling overstocks or discontinued items at lower prices. While the store’s locations differ by region, the concept is popular. Shoppers can find both brand-name and private label items, along with fresh produce and organic options. About 71.4% of patrons come back mainly for the great deals.
4. Aldi: Discount King
Aldi has built a strong reputation for value. A significant 70.4% of customers appreciate Aldi’s affordable pricing, which stems from its European-inspired model. By reducing staff and using simpler displays, Aldi keeps costs in check while offering a wide array of products, from fresh produce to baked goods.
5. Wegmans: Upstate Stores Are Widely Spread
Wegmans is particularly loved in the Mid-Atlantic region for its high-quality store-brand offerings and notable customer service. The chain has over 110 locations and 68.7% of respondents from a Marketforce survey cited value as their reason for shopping there. Fresh organic options are a substantial draw, and the chain is expanding its reach, recently opening new locations on Long Island.
6. Trader Joe: All About the Trade
Though Trader Joe’s has fewer locations than traditional supermarkets, around 67.2% of shoppers return for its value. Known for fun frozen foods and high-quality private label goods, the store also carries fresh ingredients and unique snacks that keep customers coming back.
7. Costco: Bulging Options
Costco requires a membership, but many feel the savings make it worthwhile. The store focuses on bulk purchases, allowing customers to buy everything from home staples to luxury items at competitive prices. A study found that 61.4% of members return for the deals, whether it’s for pantry staples or gourmet products.
