Swalwell Advocates for Tariff Impeachment on CNN
California Representative Eric Swalwell expressed on CNN that he believes Democrats should consider “impeaching the tariffs” that President Donald Trump has enacted.
Recently, Trump announced plans to impose 10% tariffs on various European nations that have opposed his controversial proposal to acquire Greenland from Denmark. Swalwell criticized Trump for not adequately addressing affordability issues.
CNN host Casey Hunt inquired about Swalwell’s previous statement regarding impeachment possibilities in the event Democrats regain control of the House in the midterms. She asked him to identify specific actions by the president that could be deemed impeachable.
“Let me put it this way: I think tariffs should definitely be impeached. That should be our top focus,” Swalwell replied. “From day one, the president claimed he would lower costs, yet he has done the opposite. We need to show the public that his policies are driving expenses up — from our grocery bills to the erosion of rights, especially considering recent incidents involving ICE agents.”
Swalwell has criticized Trump administration officials in the past, particularly regarding the handling of Epstein-related documents. Hunt reminded him that tariffs are a policy matter, prompting Swalwell to elaborate.
“What I mean is, if we regain subpoena power and oversight, we need to hold accountable everyone who profited from this president’s policies that seem to attack immigrants, especially since he’s reported to have made over $1 billion in his first year,” he explained.
If elected as governor, Swalwell has pledged to take severe actions against employees of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), including suspending their driver’s licenses and barring them from state government jobs.
Swalwell faced allegations of misconduct related to an alleged affair with Christine Huang, who purportedly has ties to China’s Ministry of State Security. He has denied these allegations. However, in January 2023, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy removed him from the House Intelligence Committee due to the controversy.
