The New York Police Department is searching for a suspect who was caught on video launching an attack with a flammable liquid on a group of people standing on a New York City subway platform last month.
The NYPD announced Wednesday that the shocking incident occurred at the West 28th Street subway station on February 5th at approximately 7:40 p.m.
The attack with a flammable liquid occurred on the southbound No. 1 station platform in Manhattan.
The NYPD released surveillance video showing the suspect holding two incendiary canisters at the turnstile. He was seen shouting at a group of people.
Police said the man then threw an incendiary canister at a group of people. The man then fled the crime scene.
Investigators said the target of the burning container did not know the man and the attack was unprovoked.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the attack.
Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect in the subway attack.
The suspect is described as a black man in his 30s, approximately 6 feet tall. He was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, black jacket, black pants, and black sandals.
The NYPD is asking anyone with information about the suspect or the attack to contact police by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). crimestoppers.nypdonline.org, download the NYPD Crime Stoppers mobile app or text 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577. Spanish-speaking callers should dial 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
This attack was one of many to hit New York City’s subways. Crime is so rampant that New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul decided earlier this month to deploy 750 National Guard troops to New York City’s subways to combat the spike in crime.
On Thursday, a New York City man shot another man in the head in self-defense during a fight on the subway. Officials said the gunman likely will not be charged with any crimes.
