Carolina Panthers Face Key Challenges Ahead of 2026 Season

The Carolina Panthers are aiming to establish their place in the league as they move into the 2026 season. Last year, they clinched the NFC South title with a rather underwhelming 8-9 record, relying on multiple tiebreakers to sort out the standings alongside Tampa and Atlanta. While they enjoyed a playoff victory against the Rams, it seems to have faded from memory. This season is crucial for the Panthers as they seek to prove they’re a team worth watching.

However, their start has been somewhat overshadowed by unfortunate events. During their first practice, second-year linebacker Nick Skorton suffered a non-contact injury, later confirmed as a torn ACL, effectively ending his season before it had a chance to start. Even though he wasn’t a household name in the NFL, Skorton had a commendable rookie season for the Panthers, racking up 47 tackles, 5.0 sacks, and 4 quarterback hits in just eight games. Many expected him to take a significant leap forward this year alongside free agent addition Jaelan Phillips, who was brought in to bolster the pass rush.

But dreams of a breakout season for Skorton came to an abrupt halt. Unfortunately, the bad news didn’t stop there for the Panthers. Veteran right tackle Taylor Morton has been found to have a blood clot in his lung and will begin the season on the PUP list. Rookie Monroe Freeling is lined up to fill his position during his absence. This situation adds to the offensive line’s woes, especially as they await the return of left tackle Ikem Ekwonu, who is still recovering from a torn patellar tendon sustained during the playoffs. While GM Dan Morgan mentioned that Ekwonu should be back at some point this season, a precise timeline remains unclear.

To add to their injury woes, Pro Bowl cornerback Jaycee Horn is also sidelined, dealing with a running injury that needed stitches on his foot. He’s expected to return soon, but it certainly doesn’t help the situation.

The real challenge for Carolina lies in their offensive line, which is quite unstable. Unfortunately, if there was one area that seemed relatively intact, it was edge rusher and offensive tackle, and now both are in a state of flux. Skorton’s injury is a disappointment for fans but also highlights ongoing struggles with the pass rush that the Panthers have been grappling with for several seasons. The holes in the offensive line pose genuine issues for the team. Bryce Young has faced inconsistency since arriving in Carolina, and what should have been a year of building stability now hangs in the balance, placing even more pressure on him as he heads into his fourth season.

As the Panthers prepare to face the Cardinals in the upcoming NFL Hall of Fame Game, there’s a sense of urgency. While it might feel like a bit of an overreaction to say this, they must demonstrate they can compete, especially with the current player rotation. Without that, August could bring some sobering truths about the team’s potential.
