Rickie Fowler usually tries not to disturb fans on the track. He loves his followers and they respect him while he plays.
Unfortunately, it appears that one fan was harmed during the third round of The Players Championship.
The PGA Tour’s live cameras captured the action on the 523-yard par-5 16th at TPC Sawgrass. entire interaction.
“Sir, hold the camera for a second,” Fowler’s caddy, Ricky Romano, said as Fowler’s player spoke to the ball. “All phones must be put on silent.”
Caddies tend to be loud and ask fans to be quiet. These warnings are usually enough to get people to listen, but that’s not always the case.
At this point, fans didn’t listen.
Fowler hit his tee shot and snapped it toward the fans on his follow-through.
“It’s you,” Fowler said, pointing to the right of the tee box. The 35-year-old took a few steps toward the crowd before stopping. Romano also heads towards the fans.
The PGA Tour’s live camera captured the dialect.
“Buddy, what are you doing?” someone said.
“Okay, you just said something,” Romano seems to be saying.
“Who was it?” asked the second person.
A third bystander said without hesitation: It was after we told him to stop. ”
Fowler is usually very calm on the track. His reaction to this person raised eyebrows and garnered attention on social media. This video currently has over 137,000 views.
“Wow, I’ve never seen anything like that from Ricky. But I totally understand that,” analyst Matt Every said on the broadcast.
The tee shot ended up in the fairway, and PGA Tour shot tracers tracked it 288 yards. However, Fowler remained frustrated, and it stayed with him throughout the rest of the hole.
His next two shots went into the water, resulting in a double bogey.
It is usually polite to put phones and other technology on silent at golf tournaments. Those who attend these events know to follow the rules. There are still rebels who like to push the limits.
Fowler, a fan favorite, doesn’t care about things this much, but everyone has their limits. The six-time PGA Tour winner found that line Saturday.
