The precise number of pairs of underwear to pack for a trip, as suggested by a travel expert

So, do you really need to wear underwear? Well, it turns out some people might not think so.

When it comes to traveling, anxious folks often overpack, shoving in all sorts of items for every possible scenario—most of which end up untouched.

This kind of packing is often driven by a need to be prepared for the unexpected. There’s a popular TikTok that questions, “But what happens if you have pants? What if you wear pants every day?” Other comments from women mention the fear of an unexpected period. It’s common to feel the urge to bring extra items for these surprise events.

Amanda Parker, a travel expert at UK-based Netflights, notes that travelers tend to overpack their underwear for comfort and security. She mentions, “For many, packing extra pairs gives them a feeling of control, especially if they feel anxious about the trip.”

Even though underwear is small, it can still consume valuable space in your luggage.

Parker suggests a practical approach to packing. She advises, “The key is to pack three more pairs of underwear than you think you’ll need for your trip. That’s the sweet spot! So, if you’re gone for five days, bring eight pairs.”

The formula is straightforward: take the number of travel days and add three.

These extra pairs serve as a cushion for any unforeseen situations like impromptu swims, last-minute hikes, or just the pleasure of slipping into something fresh before dinner.
