A notable townhome from the golden age of architecture has seen a significant price reduction.
This expansive 10,300-square-foot property, situated near Central Park, once served as the residence of the Italian UN ambassador. It also carries a unique history, having been home to both Calvin Klein and members of the Gucci family.
The property was initially listed with a $3.5 million drop in price, now standing at $16 million, as reported in March by Apartment Global.
Douglas Elliman’s George Vanderploeg and Stuart Brannan were entrusted with the listing back in February, according to StreetEasy. Vanderploeg noted that the current owners must set an appropriate price for regulatory reasons and manage the listing by themselves.
City records reveal that in 1991, the Italian government acquired the home from fashion mogul Calvin Klein, who purchased it from a firm linked to the Gucci family.
Constructed in 1902, this brick and limestone neo-Georgian townhouse features six levels with a remarkable depth of 77 feet. Its original golden age details have been preserved beautifully, including 13-foot ceilings, a stunning fireplace, and a grand staircase.
The front entrance opens into a magnificent hall that connects to both a spacious living room and a dining room that can seat 16. The kitchen on the parlor floor leads to a 250-square-foot patio and garden area.
Vanderploeg likened the house’s lofty ceilings to those found in the grand structures of Italy, suggesting a certain epic quality about them.
The upper floors boast a wooden-panel library, one of eight fireplaces in the house, as well as a main bedroom featuring two large dressing rooms.
This home includes six bedrooms, two of which serve as staff quarters within a sizable 1,693-square-foot basement.
Additionally, the property offers a five-story penthouse suite with bedrooms and spacious loft-like living areas illuminated by skylights, alongside access to a 1,600-square-foot rooftop.
Vanderploeg mentioned that while the latest owners have not made many alterations, they have updated the three kitchens to accommodate catering for larger gatherings.
