Congress is voting on a pair of Social Security bills that would address the Social Security program's benefit structure, but only one has support among hardliners.
Congress makes a choice HR82known as the Social Security Fairness Act. HR5342also known as the Equal Treatment Law for Public Employees. Both would address windfall reduction provisions and government pension offsets that adjust employees' Social Security benefits based on whether their employment is paid into the plan.
There are also concerns about the potential backlash to passing such a significant bill through an expulsion petition. This deprives lawmakers of the opportunity to amend or debate the bill before it is voted on.
HR 82 completely removes WEP and GPOs, and HR 5342 fixes them. As a result, some conservatives, such as Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, oppose HR82 due to fiscal concerns and support HR5342.
If both provisions were removed, HR 82 would increase the federal budget deficit by nearly $200 billion over the next 10 years. According to to cost estimates from the Congressional Budget Office.
“This bill irresponsibly eliminates Social Security WEP and government pension offsets, allowing some retirees already enrolled in government pensions to receive an unfair windfall from Social Security at the expense of other retirees. ,” Roy told Blaze News in an exclusive statement. “The Congressional Budget Office estimates that HR82 will cost taxpayers an enormous $200 billion, accelerate the collapse of Social Security, and reduce the lives of all Americans currently paying into the system and all Americans currently receiving benefits. We estimate that this will jeopardize the benefits of
HR 5342, on the other hand, contributes less to the national debt. coming closer 36 trillion dollars.
“The cost of HR 5342 is [$25-30 billion] It will take more than 10 years and will not hasten Social Security's bankruptcy,” a spokesperson for Roy's office told Blaze News in an exclusive statement.
“Many American police, firefighters, teachers, and other public servants receive Social Security benefits while working other jobs, but the WEP is sloppily constructed, leaving them unable to receive their Social Security benefits. It has been unfairly reduced,” Roy told Blaze News.
“HR 5342, which I have co-sponsored since coming to Congress in 2019, would have responsibly addressed the problems posed by WEP without accelerating the collapse of Social Security,” Roy continued. Ta. “This system was designed to replace the unfair and sloppy WEP with a carefully considered new benefit formula that would ensure these Americans received the benefits they deserved. At the same time, It was supposed to provide monthly rebates to current beneficiaries to offset the impact of WEP. ”
There are also concerns about the potential backlash to passing such a significant bill through an expulsion petition. This deprives lawmakers of the opportunity to amend or debate the bill before it is voted on.
“Imagine if he had done this to disrupt, say, Congressional stock trading in the next Congress,” a spokesperson for Mr. Roy told Blaze News.
“If we want this program to survive, if we want our country to survive for future generations, we must choose to do the right thing with what our people have earned, We need to do that with a clear eye on our financial challenges,” Roy told Blaze News in an exclusive statement. “That's why Congress has an obligation today and tomorrow to responsibly and equitably protect Social Security benefits for all Americans. That's what I voted for today.”
