Female athletes in Nordic combined are planning a protest due to their exclusion from the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. This event combines ski jumping and cross-country skiing, and it will notably lack a women’s competition next month, a rarity in the Olympics.
American competitor Annika Malacinski shared that she and her teammates will make a statement by displaying an “X” on their poles to emphasize the notion that “there are no exceptions.” She expressed confusion over the IOC’s decision, noting that women have met all the requirements set forth. “It hurts to think the IOC doesn’t grasp the unique value women bring. Without full equality, we can’t progress,” she remarked.
The IOC acknowledged the issues facing Nordic combined, mentioning its overall lack of popularity and competitiveness for both genders. They assured continued support for the International Ski Federation (FIS) to foster the growth of Nordic combined and emphasized that a thorough evaluation of the sport would follow the 2026 Games.
Malacinski conveyed her disappointment in a TikTok video, saying, “Honestly, it’s heartbreaking. I could cry all day over this. It feels like we’re being told our dreams don’t matter.” She added that the ongoing conversation about these issues is crucial.
Historically, Nordic combined events have been exclusive to men since 1924, with Norway leading the gold medal count. Athletes now face an uncertain wait until the 2030 Olympics for the chance to see women’s Nordic combined included.
