Philip Rivers Returns to the NFL
Quarterback Philip Rivers is a true icon. There’s no other way to put it.
This week, the Indianapolis Colts decided to bring Rivers back from retirement to join their practice squad, and it’s quite a move given the series of unfortunate quarterback injuries the team has faced. He last played for the Colts in 2020 and has had a noteworthy 17-year career with impressive stats to show for it.
It’s interesting to see other quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Joe Flacco, both in their forties, still on the field—it’s pretty remarkable. But the idea of someone taking five years off and then coming back? It’s almost hard to comprehend.
I’m not even 30 yet, and I’ve started noticing that my body doesn’t bounce back the way it used to. My joints creak, and during the last office football game, I could sense the toll age was starting to take. With every play, I had to evaluate if making a quick move was worth the risk. Honestly, I thought, “Am I going to pull something? Is this gonna end badly?”
Sure, these guys are elite athletes, constantly training and eating well. I try to stay active and eat fairly healthy myself, but still… at 44, playing on a practice squad? That’s impressive.
Rivers isn’t just tough because he can compete in such a grueling league. He’s also a committed Christian and a dedicated family man. He and his wife, Tiffany, were high school sweethearts, and now they have ten kids—a number that seems almost unheard of nowadays.
He grew up surrounded by football; his father was a high school coach in Alabama. Young Rivers would help as a ball boy, often finding ways to get closer to the action to learn more about the game. While he might not have been the fastest, his determination and eagerness to learn set him apart.
During his first press conference after rejoining the Colts, Rivers was candid and humble. He touched on that familiar feeling we all experience when faced with new opportunities. Sometimes, even when a chance feels risky, you won’t truly know unless you take it.
“I wasn’t holding onto any dreams of playing again. I thought that ship had sailed,” Rivers admitted. “But something about this excites me. A door opens, and you can either walk through and discover if you can do it, or turn away. I get that there’s a risk, but the only way to find out is to go for it.”
I genuinely hope he finds a way to start and leads the Colts into the playoffs. He’s not only a fantastic athlete but also an outstanding person and role model, both on and off the field.
