LIV Golf Faces Funding Dilemma

LIV Golf is shifting gears. On Thursday, the league plans to inform its players and staff that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund will cease its financial support after the current season, bringing weeks of speculation to a close.

Reportedly, Saudi Arabia has invested nearly $6 billion into LIV Golf, enabling the league to attract top players with enormous salaries amid ongoing accusations of “sportswashing” the nation’s reputation.

Despite these resources, LIV Golf has struggled to establish itself, experimenting with team formats and short tournaments. The league is rumored to have lost around $1.1 billion from 2022 to 2024, especially after a merger with the PGA Tour didn’t pan out.

In recent weeks, LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neill has been attempting to quell rumors surrounding funding issues. Earlier this month, he reassured staff via email, denying imminent dissolution of the league.

“Let me be clear: our season will continue as planned, uninterrupted and at full throttle,” O’Neill wrote in a message that circulated among various news outlets. He mentioned that while “the media world is often full of speculation,” they are committed to forging ahead in 2026 with renewed vigor.

Interestingly, he added that “the life of the startup movement is often determined by these high-pressure moments,” highlighting their determination to challenge the norm. He acknowledged past difficulties but noted their resilience and dedication to delivering an engaging sports experience.

As of now, seven tournaments remain on LIV Golf’s calendar, though they recently delayed a June event in Louisiana.

There are signs that players are starting to explore other options. A report from Today’s Golfer mentioned that a number of players have reached out to the DP World Tour as a potential alternative.
