The sense that led Malik Nabers to believe he was prepared for his return to the Giants: 'It’s time'

Malik Nabers’ Unexpected Return in Season Opener

Malik Nabers revealed that he only realized he could actually play during warmups. It was in those moments of stretching and running routes that something clicked—“a little chill through my body” made him think, “Yeah, it’s time.”

After the Giants’ impressive 28-20 win against the Cowboys, he shared this revelation about his readiness. It was a significant moment, especially as his family didn’t make it to this important victory that marked the beginning of the John Harbaugh era. Despite being a full participant in practice all week, Nabers had been considered questionable due to his recovery from a torn ACL suffered last season.

He concluded the game with six receptions out of nine targets, racking up 69 yards as he took another step toward regaining the form that had characterized his rookie and early second season before the injury derailed him.

According to Nabers, it’s all about confronting that one-on-one battle. “You gotta do it for yourself,” he said. He admitted that he didn’t want his family there if he felt he might let them down by not playing. “I had to take charge, go out there, and see if I could do it,” he explained, reflecting on how good he felt during the game.

Nabers made his entrance onto the field just before 6:30 p.m., going through some exercises with a trainer. He had been cautious earlier in the week about risking his career, which lingered on his mind as game day approached.

It didn’t take long for him to make an impact either. On the very first drive of the game, quarterback Jaxson Dart found him for a 9-yard gain, which got the crowd chanting his name after each reception. The Giants showcased a balanced offense, allowing Nabers to gradually get back into the rhythm of the game without needing to take center stage immediately.

“I had to feel like I wanted to play,” he emphasized. “It was about the energy everyone brought. I needed to absorb that.”
