The significance of Arvell Reese to the Ohio State defense

Ohio State’s Defense Stands Out in Season Opener

As the highly anticipated season opener kicked off between No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Ohio State, Arch Manning and the Longhorns found themselves near midfield against Ohio State’s formidable defense. With Ohio State linebacker Arbel Reese positioned right above the left guard, he made a key move.

In a surprising twist, instead of dropping back into coverage, Reese charged downhill and successfully sacked Manning, catching the left tackle off guard. Such plays highlight why Ohio State boasts one of the top defenses nationally and places Reese among the leading prospects for the 2026 NFL Draft, keeping the Buckeyes in contention for another national championship.

This evening, the Buckeyes will launch their title defense at the Cotton Bowl against No. 10 Miami. Miami recently scraped through a match against Texas A&M, overshadowed by the attention on their standout defensive prospect, Reuben Bain Jr. However, the spotlight will soon shift to Reese and the talented Ohio State defense.

Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia describes coaching this group as a “joy.” He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with such dedicated young athletes, emphasizing the camaraderie within the team.

Patricia’s defense is currently regarded as one of the best across the nation, with standout statistics in various categories: first overall in defense allowing just 213.5 yards per game, first in scoring defense at only 8.15 points per game, and fifth in rushing defense, giving up 84.5 yards per game. Reese is among four players from Patricia’s squad anticipated to be first-round picks in next spring’s draft.

But it’s Reese, arguably the linchpin for opposing offenses, who garners particular attention. After being a backup linebacker last year and transitioning into a starting role for the current season, he has already left a mark, recording nine tackles and one sack in their opening game against Texas.

On that initial play, Reese executed a well-timed blitz, faking coverage and accelerating past the left tackle, who himself could be a first-round draft choice, before dropping Manning for a sack. This tackle was one of seven he has achieved this season, often featuring in varied roles from blitzer to spy.

Reese’s versatility is crucial; he not only excels as a blitzer but has also shown great awareness and agility in coverage. During a play against Wisconsin, he successfully contributed to a coverage sack by effectively covering a tight end and passing off a route to the safety.

As his influence grew in the first half of the season, offensive coordinators altered their strategies, aligning protection schemes towards him, which was likely a factor in Ohio State’s overall defensive effectiveness. Patricia noted that Reese significantly impacted their game plans, and opposing offenses had to adapt their strategies accordingly.

This adjustment may not be obvious in Reese’s statistics, but it has been palpable across the defense. For instance, in a situation against Michigan, Reese discreetly influenced the offensive line’s protection, allowing his teammates to capitalize.

Patricia often employs techniques that emphasize the threat Reese poses. In a Big Ten Championship Game play against Indiana, for example, both Reese and another player navigated their position in a way that created opportunities for other defenders.

This “gravity” that Reese exerts helps elevate Ohio State’s defensive capabilities, even if individual stats don’t fully reflect it.

Patricia is acutely aware of the overall impact Reese has on the team. He mentioned that as opposing teams review footage, they’ll adjust their methods to account for Reese, which ultimately creates chances for other players to shine.

Tonight, as the Buckeyes embark on a journey they hope will culminate in another championship, Reese’s unique presence could be pivotal.
