Biden Announces Departure from 2024 Presidential Race
A year after his initial announcement, former President Joe Biden stated on July 21, 2024, that he would be stepping back from the race against current President Donald Trump. This decision came on the heels of Biden’s challenging debate performance on June 27, where he faced scrutiny for struggling with questions during an increasingly tense situation.
Political experts suggest that Biden’s abrupt choice to withdraw can have significant implications for his party and his legacy. His exit from the race marks the end of his bid for a second term.
Tebi Troy, a presidential historian and former health official, commented via email on how this move might overshadow Biden’s achievements. He noted that while Biden was once celebrated for battling Trump, he may now be remembered for allowing that rivalry to resurface.
Despite the challenging debate, Biden hesitated to hand over the reins to another candidate. He initially insisted on continuing his campaign, with his administration signaling a desire to face Trump in the November election. However, pressure from prominent Democratic figures, including Senator Jon Tester of Montana and Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, eventually led Biden to announce that stepping back was in the best interest of his party and the nation.
This withdrawal, unprecedented in nearly six decades, has left the Democratic Party in a state of uncertainty. Following his announcement, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place on the ballot.
Alex Keesal, a historian, noted that Biden’s decision was difficult to disentangle from the context of his earlier debate performance. He expressed concern that this late exit might cost the party dearly in the upcoming election.
Historically, few presidents choose to withdraw from reelection bids, especially during the election itself. Truman and Johnson are notable examples, but they made their announcements much earlier in the campaign season.
Troy added that following Biden’s late exit, the Democrats find themselves in a precarious position. Incumbents typically have advantages in reelection efforts, but history shows mixed results for those who pull out late in the race.
Sine Biden’s departure, literature examining his presidency has increased, focusing on his challenges and perceived cognitive decline. The House Oversight Committee is among those investigating potential issues surrounding his mental fitness during his time in office.
Public opinion on Biden has fluctuated dramatically, dipping to a low of 36% by July 2024 from a high of 57% during the early months of his presidency. Yet Keesal remains hopeful that over time, historical analysis may be kinder, highlighting Biden’s contributions and personal decency.
