Giants’ Playoff Aspirations Dwindle Against Bears
The New York Giants faced a tough challenge against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field in Week 10, as their playoff hopes hung in the balance. Early in the fourth quarter, the Giants managed to score a touchdown while at third-and-goal, just a couple of yards from the end zone. However, after the Bears successfully stopped them, the Giants opted for a field goal, adding just two points to their tally with a little over ten minutes left in the game.
As the kick sailed through the uprights, a penalty flag appeared—the Bears had too many players on the field. This gave the Giants a chance for another attempt on fourth down, right at the half-yard line. But instead, Coach Brian Daboll decided to take the points. FOX announcer Greg Olsen questioned this choice almost immediately, yet as it turned out, Daboll’s decision didn’t derail the Bears—Caleb Williams led Chicago to yet another dramatic comeback victory.
The final score was 24-20 in favor of the Bears, who kept their postseason dreams alive thanks to this second consecutive comeback win. While Williams obviously deserves kudos for orchestrating those crucial final drives, one could argue Daboll also played a part in this outcome with his field goal call.
It’s hard to fathom, really—choosing a field goal when just half a yard stood between them and a possible winning score. Decisions like that might soon cost him his head coaching role with the Giants.
Ultimately, Daboll’s Giants keep stumbling in situations they could handle better; this game is perhaps the most frustrating example of that trend.
While Olsen criticized Daboll’s field goal choice during the broadcast, it seems he was vindicated afterward. Social media exploded with varied reactions, some of which were, well, less than rational.
On Sunday, Daboll was visibly coaching for his job, and one can’t help but think this decision might seal his fate. With a current record of 2-8, the Giants appear to be out of the playoff race, now just playing for pride. It would have been beneficial for Daboll to have faith in his team to finish strong, but that didn’t happen, leading to yet another surprising loss.
The narrative of this game could have revolved around Caleb Williams and his ability to rise above a series of dropped passes by his teammates to secure the win for the Bears. Instead, there’s just a lingering question about decision-making on Daboll’s part.
