The surprising explanation for the Patriots’ unusual Joe Milton trade

The Patriots made some waves earlier this year by trading backup quarterback Joe Milton for a fifth-round pick, making many raise their eyebrows, especially considering he was a seventh-round choice before.

There were whispers that this decision was linked to Drake May, who many believe could be the future quarterback for New England.

New head coach Mike Vrabel stated that the trade was aimed at doing what’s best for the team.

NFL insider Greg Bedard, during his “Patriot Podcast,” mentioned that the move wasn’t influenced by any threat to May, but rather pertained to the overall dynamic within the quarterback room, emphasizing that it was merely about knowing one’s role.

“It’s crucial to be part of a cohesive quarterback room. That can pose challenges sometimes,” he explained. “This wasn’t about Drake May—it was just a matter of the locker room chemistry.”

In a recent comment, May shared his thoughts post-trade, emphasizing that he had no issues with Milton. He mentioned, “I texted Joe, and we really connected. We pushed each other in practice, and he’s got a strong arm, no doubt.”

May reflected on Milton’s potential, recalling his standout performance against the Bills, saying, “Our playing styles are kind of similar. It’s interesting to see our college experiences overlap. It was great sharing ideas and building off each other.”

This trade was just part of a busy offseason for the Patriots. After Bill Belichick’s departure, the team quickly brought in Vrabel, reinstated Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator, and secured veteran receiver Stefon Diggs as a free agent.
