A recent TikTok trend utilizing audio clips linked to the assassination of Charlie Kirk is stirring controversy, drawing condemnation from Turning Point USA and various commentators across the political landscape.
Turning Point USA issued a statement on Saturday strongly denouncing the trend and urged for the removal of the audio from the platform. They remarked, “Turning Point USA condemns in the strongest terms the TikTok audio trend that recreationally exploits or references the assassination of our founder Charlie Kirk.”
The videos, which have gained traction on social media recently, feature users including this audio in transition clips—a popular format on TikTok.
Turning Point USA criticized the trend for trivializing violence. They expressed, “Charlie Kirk was the victim of an actual act of political violence, and turning it into viral content is grotesque and dehumanizing.” The organization believes this trend is indicative of broader cultural issues regarding the nature of online content.
A further statement reinforced their perspective, stating, “There is nothing harmless, funny, or acceptable about this. It reflects a culture that trivializes violence and reduces the real human cost to a punch line.” They called upon TikTok to act, declaring, “This has no place on TikTok or anywhere. This audio needs to be removed.”
As the trend spread, reactions from various online commentators emerged. Conservative activist and former NCAA swimmer, Riley Gaines, took to social media to express her discontent. She noted, “They celebrate and laugh at innocent deaths while claiming to be morally superior. To them, it’s a joke.” She characterized those participating in the trend as “soulless ghouls.”
Erica Kirk, Charlie Kirk’s wife, also condemned the trend. She indicated that such uses of audio linked to Kirk’s assassination were deeply inappropriate. The backlash continued to build as more people denounced the videos, with Pastor Jordan Wells stating that reducing the tragic circumstances of Kirk’s death to a trending sound was disturbing and indicative of a broken cultural moment.
Interestingly, some voices from the political left also criticized the trend. Progressive journalist Taylor Lorenz noted the absurdity of the audio becoming a popular sound for outfit changes, further highlighting the troubling reception of the incident.
In response to the rising criticism, TikTok confirmed it had taken action regarding the audio and related content, indicating that it violated the platform’s policies. A spokesperson remarked, “This violates our policies, and we have taken steps to remove those voices, as well as any related content.” They emphasized that the platform does not support content glorifying violence.
Turning Point USA chose not to provide further comments for the moment.
