The urgent Iran nuclear issue that Trump has not addressed yet

Negotiators from Europe and Iran wrapped up their discussions in Geneva on Friday without achieving a significant breakthrough. However, diplomats shared with the Associated Press that there’s hope for more talks with Iranian representatives in the near future.

Details about the potential for further negotiations will likely emerge within the next two weeks, suggested one official. This follows a message from President Trump communicated by White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt.

A former Pentagon official raised concerns about something crucial that hasn’t been adequately addressed.

If Tehran were to comply with Trump’s demand to abandon its nuclear program, there’s still the question of what to do with the existing nuclear material beyond Iran’s borders, he noted.

This official, having lived in various countries like Iran and Iraq, pointed out that there are multiple strategies available without requiring military intervention.

Another idea was to involve the International Atomic Energy Agency in managing the nuclear materials, though trust in international organizations remains shaky.

He argued that if Trump is earnest about wanting Iran to decommission its nuclear initiative, discussions should start with allies about how to oversee and secure this nuclear material until it can be safely removed from Iran.

In his view, India could be a reliable partner to take control of the materials, as they are generally trusted by the U.S., Israel, and Iran alike. The focus, he emphasized, should combine both reactive and proactive strategies.

As discussions progressed this week, the White House expressed optimism about revisiting negotiations, calling them significant.

Interestingly, he referenced a famous quote from Margaret Thatcher to George H. W. Bush during the Gulf War, urging caution. He drew a parallel with Marco Rubio’s approach to European allies, stressing the need for united resolve.

During a conversation on Thursday, Rubio engaged with counterparts regarding the ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran, highlighting a mutual commitment to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

In summary, despite some optimism stemming from the recent talks, there are still many unresolved issues regarding Iran’s nuclear aspirations.
