FCC Investigates “The View” for Possible Equal Time Violations
During a recent press conference, the Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) revealed that “The View” is under investigation for potential breaches of equal time rules. This comes after the FCC updated its guidelines to include talk shows like “The View,” mandating equal coverage for all candidates when one is featured during campaigns.
At the same event, it was mentioned that if someone is seen as a partisan political activist, they may not be protected by the honest news exception.
The show recently hosted Rep. Jasmine Crockett from Texas, alongside Rep. James Talarico, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate. Crockett’s appearance was also highlighted.
The FCC confirmed they are considering enforcement action but did not specify how “The View” might have violated the rules. Notably, this decision followed criticism from Stephen Colbert, who had been advised by CBS to avoid airing his interview with Talarico to prevent conflicts with these regulations.
Kerr elaborated on these new rules, saying that viewers can submit evidence and file petitions, which will be reviewed as part of FCC case law. He reiterated that those classified as partisan political activists typically do not qualify for the honest reporting exception.
Colbert addressed Kerr’s comments, suggesting that similar rules weren’t being enforced for right-wing talk radio, a point Kerr acknowledged, noting there have been fewer issues in that sector.
Kerr criticized the media’s portrayal of Colbert’s claims of censorship, which CBS denied, stating firmly that there was no censorship involved. He expressed disappointment, suggesting that the media should reflect on this incident, implying it was an embarrassing moment for journalism.
