A scene from the U.S. Open went viral Wednesday because of how much drama and intrigue it packed into five seconds of footage. It's the story of a man, a couple of drinks and a woman, but no one knows what's going on.
This framing and pacing It seems It tells a story. At first glance, it appears he's buying the woman next to him a drink, but the man behind him jumps in and gives it to her first. If that's what happened, it's a soul-crushing moment of defeat and a heartbreaking tale of unrequited love. At least, this is the version of events that everyone seems to believe.
We believe there is more to this story, and we intend to examine these five seconds like the Zapruder film to explain what was happening at this moment.
I don't believe for a second that the woman next to him is his wife or girlfriend – their body language and eye contact doesn't match at all, in fact I think the woman accepting the drink is a friend or family member.
We actually Of note is the woman on the far right of the frame, who appears to be gesturing and speaking to the man. As the man returns to his seat, he makes eye contact with the woman. At the 5-second mark, it's clear the man is paying little attention to the drink being handed to him next to him.
Let me explain how this appeared to me.
- Men go buy drinks for themselves and their partners after the first set
- While he was gone the drink girl made her rounds and she ordered a drink for herself.
- The man returns with two drinks and wonders what happened.
He looks at her quizzically as she gestures with her left hand as if to say, “I've got one now.” there is nothing It has absolutely nothing to do with the woman next to him. Also note that the woman between them never makes eye contact with the older man, instead she quickly looks up, makes eye contact with the man in the back row, and says “thank you.”
She expected the drink to come from above. There was no expectation or agreement that an older man would buy her a drink. There could well have been two couples sitting next to each other who couldn't get four seats, so they were awkwardly spaced apart in a T-shape to allow couples close proximity to each other.

So as you can see here, the general idea is that one couple is seated across from each other and positioned as the older couple, with the younger couple sitting in front and behind them. In this scenario, I believe from body language that everyone knows each other, but I don't believe for a second that the man bringing the drinks is being rejected.
Justice will be served for all involved, and I find this moment completely innocent and wonderful.
