These four apps can help you save on gas.

Gas prices have been rising lately, and if you want to avoid spending a fortune on fuel while knowing you could find cheaper options nearby, having a tool to check local prices is really helpful. Here are a few useful apps to help you locate the best gas prices and maybe even earn a little cash back.

GasBuddy

When it comes to tracking gas prices, you can’t skip GasBuddy. It’s arguably the most well-known app for this purpose, launching in 2000 as a website and then transitioning to mobile in 2010.

The beauty of GasBuddy is its fast access to competitive prices in your area. It offers a list view to filter by price, distance, fuel type, and payment method (cash or credit). Alternatively, the map view shows nearby stations with their prices. Since GasBuddy relies on user-generated data, you can report discrepancies if you find any incorrect prices.

Google Maps

You might already be familiar with Google Maps for finding directions or checking traffic. What’s less obvious is its gas price feature. If you tap on the Gas tab (you may need to scroll a bit), you’ll instantly see local gas stations along with a quick map and price list. Clicking on a station shows you detailed prices for regular, mid-grade, and premium fuel.

Below that, there’s also a “Popular Times” graph, which indicates when the station is most and least crowded and gives an idea of expected wait times.

Waze

Originally a community-focused navigation app, Waze lets users share real-time updates about traffic, hazards, and yes, gas prices. Despite Google acquiring it in 2013, Waze has kept its original vibe. To check gas prices, just tap Where?, select “Gas,” and you’ll find nearby stations with markers showing the best deals. It’s also convenient that you can customize your settings to prioritize certain gas types and brands, ensuring relevant results take precedence on your map.

Upside

You might have heard of Upside, especially if you listen to podcasts where they advertise. Notably, they didn’t pay for this mention—it’s included because it’s a genuinely useful app. Upside helps you find cheaper gas while also earning cash back.

Unlike other apps that just show prices, Upside highlights stations and the cash back offers available. Once you pick a station, the price list appears for various fuel types. However, keep in mind that cash back is only available at Upside’s partner stations, which means your go-to spot might not qualify. Still, Upside claims to cover about 50,000 locations, so you’re likely to find something nearby.

Your Road to Savings

Gas is one of those things we all need, but high prices shouldn’t be a given. Use these apps to compare gas prices in your vicinity and save money at each fill-up. There’s no sense in paying more for fuel when cheaper options are out there.
