Let’s Ask the Girls!

This week, American women showcased their incredible spirit and determination at the Milan-Cortina Winter Games. They really made a mark on the world stage.

Along the way, they snagged several gold medals in dramatic competitions.

What a source of pride! And honestly, it was a refreshing break from all the stresses we’ve been facing in life.

Figure skater Alisa Liu clinched gold, ending a 20-year medal drought for the U.S. in the sport. After retiring at just 16, she returned with a beaming smile and a renewed sense of joy.

She made it look effortless.

Slalom skier Mikaela Shiffrin, meanwhile, won her first gold since the tragic loss of her father in 2020, becoming the most decorated American female skier in history. As she crossed the finish line, she took a moment to honor her father.

At 41, bobsledder Elana Myers Taylor finally achieved her long-desired gold medal in her fifth Olympic outing. Balancing motherhood with intense training, she also deserves a nod for being an extraordinary mom to her two young sons, both of whom are deaf.

Team USA’s women’s hockey team clinched a thrilling overtime victory against Canada, thanks to a stunning goal from Megan Keller.

After the match, captain Hilary Knight recalled sharing uplifting words with her teammates, embodying the belief in their potential. It was a stirring moment of unity and national pride.

For those few moments, we set aside our political differences and felt a rush of love for this country.

It marked a remarkable week for these athletes, washing away some of the negativity that often divides us.

They kept us quiet for a while. We had something real to rally around—if only for a moment.

And let’s not forget the devoted support from family members, like Hailey Wynn’s brothers, who decked themselves in red, white, and blue while rallying for their sister. Their enthusiastic social media presence drew attention and brought in new fans.

Myers-Taylor’s husband also shared a touching moment at the medal ceremony, holding their son and proudly acknowledging her achievements.

Broadcaster Kenny Albert perfectly captured the excitement when Keller scored the winning goal, exclaiming, “Score! Megan Keller, the hero of the overtime game! America wins the gold medal in Milan!” His brief pause afterward allowed viewers to fully absorb the joy of the moment.

Photographer Bruce Bennett managed to capture an iconic shot of Keller, combining the agony of defeat and the joy of victory with the American flag in the background.

Everything came together just right.

Sure, next week we might find ourselves wrapped up in disagreements again, but for now, American women have truly given us something to celebrate.

I really wish I could bottle this feeling. Cheers to that!
