Thieves steal 133 tons of chicken from Cuban plant to buy laptops, appliances

They went crazy.

A crew of 30 people is suspected of stealing 133 tons of chicken from a state-run facility in Cuba and selling it on the streets to buy tech and electronic goods.

This “bird game” was carried out by the Havana factory’s shift supervisor, IT workers, and security guards. According to state television on Friday.

Officials have not said exactly when the 1,660 boxes of meat flew into the shed, but they suspect it happened between midnight and 2 a.m. on a day when temperatures inside the cold facility fluctuated.

Surveillance camera footage showed a truck transporting the chickens from the site.

The perpetrators took to the streets to sell chicken meat and used the money to buy refrigerators, laptops, televisions, and air conditioners.

The popular chicken, which is part of the communist country’s rationed food, has become difficult to obtain in recent years. Cuba has been in the grip of a years-long economic crisis, with food, medicine and fuel shortages.

The loot was not chicken feed, but the equivalent of an entire month’s worth of chicken rations for a medium-sized state, said Rigoberto Mustelier, director of government food distribution company Comal.

Large-scale thefts are rare on the Caribbean island, but crime has increased since the coronavirus pandemic.

The suspects, some of whom are not connected to the facility, could face up to 20 years in prison.
