A third assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump was thwarted at the last minute Saturday when local police stopped a man with a gun and a fake pass outside a rally in the Coachella Valley, the local sheriff said.
Police said the suspect was arrested about a mile away from the rally venue with a fake admission ticket. He also carried a loaded shotgun, a handgun, and a high-capacity magazine.
“We probably thwarted another assassination attempt,” Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said.
The suspect, identified as Bem Miller, was apprehended by police at a checkpoint about a half-mile from the entrance to the rally. He was in possession of a fake press machine and a VIP pass.
“They were different enough to cause alarm in Congress,” Bianco said, according to the newspaper. Riverside Press Enterprises.
Bianco said Miller was a member of a right-wing anti-government group and is believed to have been plotting to kill Trump.
He has a master's degree from UCLA and is running for the Nevada state legislature in 2022, the paper said.
Miller was arrested on suspicion of possessing a loaded firearm and a high-capacity magazine and was released on $5,000 bail, according to police records.
