Student Activists Protest OpenAI in Washington, D.C.
On Monday afternoon, student activists staged a takeover of the lobby in Washington, D.C., where OpenAI has its public lobbying office. This demonstration led to the arrest of 13 individuals, with one activist carrying a sign that proclaimed, “OpenAI bought my Senate seat.”
More than 30 protesters gathered at the Gallup Building, stretching out a large banner that stated “Stop Stealing Our Future.” The protest lasted roughly two hours before police intervened and arrested the demonstrators.
An incident report from the Metropolitan Police Department indicates that those arrested were charged with “illegal entry.” After their detainment, police separated the group, sending seven to District 1, four to District 2, and two to District 3 for processing. The names and locations of those arrested remain undisclosed.
This protest was orchestrated in collaboration between the climate advocacy group Sunrise Movement and the anti-AI organization QuitGPT. In a shared statement, both groups emphasized that the events were part of a larger campaign taking place across over 20 states in August, urging politicians to “discard Big Tech.”
“Our friends risked arrest to confront OpenAI,” said Raya Gupta, a student organizer involved in the protest.
Mr. Gupta expressed concern, stating, “Our generation faces uncertainties regarding job security after college, access to clean drinking water, and the diminishing power of voters as elections become increasingly influenced by Big Tech. With the balance shifting between the general public and billionaires, it’s clear our future is jeopardized unless we take action.”
The protest reflects a growing trend of arrests linked to demonstrations against artificial intelligence across the nation. Previous protests have seen arrests during city hall meetings concerning the development of data centers and the occupation of federal offices related to AI-powered immigration systems.
Despite increasing public frustration with AI companies, lawmakers from both political parties continue to align with the tech industry’s lobbying efforts. OpenAI’s office in Washington recently opened, and one of the company’s connected super PACs has allocated over $140 million for the upcoming midterm elections, influencing federal AI regulation.
Opposition to major AI firms and their data operations transcends political lines. A recent bestseller titled Code Red: Left, Right, China, and the Race to Control AI outlines how the MAGA movement can develop an AI strategy that benefits humanity while preventing the handover of control to Silicon Valley or external powers.
