A brief history of Nuasin Next Generation Charter School
Nuacinmeaning “land between,” and was created by the Wappinger Union of Native Americans who lived in the area for a location between the Harlem River and the mouth of the estuary along modern Jerome Avenue. Founded in the 2009-2010 academic year as a Metropolitan Lighthouse Charter School, the school moved to an independently managed charter school under the name Nuasin in 2021. Since then, the school has thrived, earning five years of charter renewal without conditions and securing approval for expansion. In addition to the existing K-8 campus at 180 W. 165th St. and 1366 Cromwell Ave., Nuasin is set to expand further, opening in 2026 at the new K-5 district K-5 school, with first year grade K and 1-1 grade.
Nuacin's Fundamentals: Three Pillars of Excellence
Nuacin is more than just a school in two locations – Built on a strong foundation of three core pillars.
- Strictness – Nuasin challenges students to unlock unlocking undeveloped possibilities, talents and abilities. This academic rigor does not thwart the confidence of the scholar, but it strengthens the confidence of the scholar and allows them to achieve their goals.
- Self-protection – At Nuacin, students' voices are not only welcome, but essential. This pillar ensures students feel they are seeing and hearing, and develops the skills to advocate for themselves beyond the classroom.
- community – Scholars and their families are not part of nuacin, but are active participants in the wider community. This engagement allows students to reinforce the value of being involved and being a responsible citizen, and to see, protect, hear, be loved, cherish and respect students. This aspect of the community affects not only students and families, but also staff and educators at Nuacin. A Spanish teacher asks Nicholas Chevalier I had to say how this pillar feels in a building:
“Nuacin's next generation will treat you like a family, regardless of your diversity, culture, or background. Everyone can express themselves clearly and confidently without fear of failure.”
Seeing is just as good as it can be
If you're wondering whether these values will really come back to life Nuacinthe proof is in the results.
Looking at the comparative data from 2019 to 2023, nuacin had a significant increase in proficiency, with English scores increasing by 21% and mathematics scores rising by 26%. These improvements far outweigh the benefits made within the same time frame by both the NYC Department of Education (+5% in English, +4% in Mathematics) and District 9 (+3% in English, +2% in Mathematics).
Additionally, 96% of families rely on schools to prepare their children for a life beyond college, careers and high school. In Nuacin, 100% of academics graduate within four years, and 86% are accepted and attended by four-year higher education institutions. Notable universities and universities attended by Nuacin alumni include NYU, UCLA, PACE University and the University of Georgia.
Beyond the numbers, Kings Kwajo Peplathe current 11th grade scholar shared his thoughts on his favorite theme, mathematics:
“My favorite subject is mathematics, because numbers help us understand the world. [Nuasin] They are very different because you let you make you do the projects that will help you understand very well. At my school, everyone in the classroom is allowed to express their ideas. ”

Diversity is important
