It’s all about the return.
For quite some time, people have envisioned what a robot might resemble. Now, the tables have turned a bit.
If you were to ask one of the rising AIs to depict a typical man from various countries, the results might be, well, less than flattering.
Recent examples from the UK show social media channels exploring local cultures using AI to generate surreal representations of average men from different nations.
“These types of guys exist in every country… which one fits yours?” the caption states. The account behind it, @reimagineuk, posed the challenge.
It’s fair to say that the portrayals of American men sparked some frustration among viewers.
According to the AI, American men might sport beards reminiscent of a “Duck Dynasty” character, cowboy hats, plaid vests, and enjoy oversized burgers.
At least they didn’t depict them as overweight—thank goodness.
Meanwhile, the UK counterpart didn’t fare as well. He was illustrated as a pale, hefty soccer hooligan, wearing track pants and a jersey.
Though AI may have exaggerated some traits, other international versions were equally amusing or puzzling. For instance, a Portuguese man was shown with a beard, dressed in a white shirt and floral vest, prompting one commenter to liken him to Cristiano Ronaldo.
On the other hand, the Italian image featured a model-type man, showcasing a fit physique, dressed in slacks and a tailored jacket.
Other stereotypes included a bald Russian in a tracksuit, a slim Korean rocking a K-pop hairstyle, and a Nigerian man flashy in a floral suit with accessories to match—all striking contrasts to the German DJ donned in cargo shorts and big headphones.
Finishing off the series were a Japanese office worker in a collared shirt and tie, a Frenchman in a black turtleneck, and a Spaniard dressed as a Matador.
The cultural representations ignited mixed feelings, with some viewers applauding the accuracy.
“France nailed it,” wrote one, while another asked, “Who’s moving to Italy?”
“America and hamburgers,” lamented a third. “I bet he said that with an American accent.”
Yet not everyone was pleased with these stereotypical portrayals. One critic remarked, “That Spaniard looks Mexican,” implying that the AI struggled with geographical nuances.
“We don’t dress like that in Spain,” chimed in another local, while another noted the diversity within the U.S. “The UK didn’t quite hit the mark either.”
One comment encapsulated the frustration: “We’re not your typical Americans. East to west, we’re different.”
“Stereotypes are always ridiculous,” someone commented.
Aside from cultural inaccuracies, the AI’s inclination to generate realistic depictions can indeed strike a nerve.
In November, a British woman who dated a “U.S. Army Colonel” on Tinder discovered he was a con artist after he swindled over $20,000 using hyper-realistic AI videos.
“I’ve never felt so deceived,” lamented the victim, reflecting on her experience.
