Vice President Harris defended the families of those attacked in a new podcast interview published Sunday.
Last month, Harris was asked by host Alex Cooper about comments made by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-Arkansas), who said the vice president had “humility” because she has no biological children. There's nothing that can keep us safe.” Call Her Daddy” podcast.
In response, Ms. Harris said, “Family comes in many forms, and I think we're all increasingly understanding that it's not the 1950s anymore.”
“Family comes in many forms, but it's still family,” Harris added.
Harris' husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, approached Sanders for comment at a campaign event in Brooklyn, New York, last month.
“Because it's Cole and Ella for some reason.” [Emhoff] She is not Kamala's biological child and there is nothing in her life to keep her humble,” Emhoff said.
“It's as if keeping women humble, whether they have children or not, is something we should strive for, but that's not the case,” Emhoff continued. “But going back to that debate, Kamala certainly kept Trump humble in that debate, because that's what this is really about.”
During the “Call Dad” interview, Harris also responded to comments from Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, a 2021 Republican vice presidential candidate, who said the United States has “many people in dire situations who are childless.” It is run by cat ladies.'' They want to make the rest of this country miserable because they ignore their own lives and the choices they've made. ”
“I think it's a mean and mean spirit,” Harris said. “And I think most Americans want leaders who understand that we don't measure our strength by who we bring down. The true measure of a leader's strength is by who we lift up. It depends.”
Vance said in late July that his 2021 comments were “sarcastic.”
The Hill has reached out to Sanders' office and a spokesperson for Vance.
