Thomas Massie Faces Opponent Chosen by President Trump

Primary Challenge for Rep. Thomas Massie

Rep. Thomas Massie from Kentucky is gearing up for a tough primary challenge from pro-Trump contenders in the upcoming midterms.

On Tuesday morning, Ed Gullane, a former Navy SEAL and long-time Kentucky farmer, announced his intention to run against Massie, backed by President Donald Trump. The president has made it clear he aims to unseat Massie, who has often expressed criticism of Trump within the House Republican group and has even opposed some of the president’s supported legislation.

Gullane’s entry into the race was initially reported by Fox News Digital.

He explained his motivation by saying that constituents in Kentucky’s 4th District should prioritize advancing the president’s agenda, rather than consistently opposing his initiatives.

Massie notably rejected Trump’s key piece of legislation, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, in July. Additionally, he was among the Democrats opposing a bill aimed at reforming the District of Columbia’s crime policies.

As a more liberal Republican, Massie has frequently found himself at odds with his party regarding government funding that aligns with Trump’s views. Additionally, he is collaborating with Democrats to urge the release of investigative documents pertaining to the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The White House has warned legislators that backing a petition to force the release of these files could be seen as a “highly adversarial act.”

“This district is Trump country,” Gullane asserted. “The president doesn’t need Congressional obstacles; he needs support. I believe I can defeat Thomas Massie and work closely with Trump to bring the America First policies that Kentuckians expect.”

Expressing his strong stance, Trump, in a recent Truth Social post, stated, “Thomas Massie, a weak, pathetic RINO from my favorite state of Kentucky who has won six major elections, must be removed from office!” He continued by praising Gullane, describing him as a dedicated American patriot ready to stand by Trump.

In response, Massie expressed skepticism about Gullane’s candidacy, stating that he had previously been rejected by many officials in the district. He also criticized Gullane as a failed candidate and accused him of trying to gain the endorsement of Trump’s team.

Massie, now in his seventh term representing a strongly Republican area in western Kentucky, recently reported raising significant campaign funds—about $768,000 in just the third quarter of this year.
