Crackdown on Illegal Immigration in Los Angeles
Since June, over 10,000 undocumented immigrants have been apprehended in Los Angeles amid a federal crackdown, which included individuals suspected of serious crimes such as murder, kidnapping, and sex offenses. This announcement was made by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Thursday.
The initiative aims to eliminate what the government refers to as the “worst of the worst” among illegal immigrants across various U.S. cities.
In this period, officials from ICE, DHS, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have executed countless arrests, coinciding with a surge of protests throughout the city.
“This operation has achieved success despite violent mobs attacking our law enforcement, throwing rocks and incendiary devices, and trying to disrupt lawful arrests,” the DHS stated.
Los Angeles operates as a sanctuary city under California law and has recently proposed measures in response to the increase in ICE activities. For instance, one proposed bill seeks to prohibit staff from wearing masks, a move critics argue could resemble “secret police” tactics.
“ICE officers have reported a staggering 1,150% rise in assaults against them and an 8,000% increase in death threats. Meanwhile, local politicians want to make it easier for political extremists to target our tireless law enforcement,” said Tricia McLaughlin, a DHS Assistant Secretary.
The DHS disclosed names of ten individuals considered the most dangerous illegal immigrants, arrested for serious crimes, including rape, aggravated assault, and armed carjacking.
“Among those apprehended are some of the most violent criminals like murderers, kidnappers, and sex offenders,” McLaughlin remarked.
“Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass have let these criminals roam free. Thankfully, thanks to our law enforcement, California is now safer with these individuals off the streets. Yet, instead of acknowledging their efforts, they keep demonizing our brave officers during these operations,” a DHS statement read.
In July, Governor Newsom called on President Trump to cease the militarization of Los Angeles, highlighting the detrimental impact on local communities. “Enough is enough. The actions of Stephen Miller and Trump’s administration must end. They are infringing on constitutional rights and causing terror in neighborhoods,” Newsom commented.
