Three Dead as Migrant Boat Sinks off Greek Island of Samos

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — The Greek coast guard says three people have died and five have been rescued after a boat carrying migrants wrecked off the eastern Aegean island of Samos.

The Coast Guard said Monday it was unclear how many people were on board what appeared to be a small boat, or what exactly happened.

A major search and rescue operation was underway northwest of Samos, involving three coast guard patrol boats, a civilian ship and an air force helicopter and crew in case any survivors made it to shore.

There was no immediate information available about the identities or nationalities of those rescued, or about the three bodies that were recovered.

Greece lies on one of the most common routes into the European Union for people fleeing conflict and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Despite increased enforcement by Greek authorities along the border with Turkey, thousands continue to cross the border, often in flimsy rubber dinghies, from the Turkish coast to nearby Greek islands.
