Three Elderly Men Found Dead in Detroit

In a tragic event in Detroit, three elderly men, including two veterans, were discovered dead in what is suspected to be a drug-related basement. Police reported that the men were brutally bludgeoned with hammers.

The victims, identified as Marine Corps veterans Mark Burnett, 65, and Norman Hamlin, 66, along with 72-year-old William Barrett, were found in various spots within the basement of Hamlin’s residence on Edsel Street, according to law enforcement.

Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald confirmed that the cause of death for all three was “blunt force trauma,” with at least one victim also sustaining a stab wound. However, he refrained from sharing further details about the scene.

While searching for the missing Hamlin, police encountered an individual nearby who staggered toward them, claiming he had been struck with a hammer.

Upon their arrival at Hamlin’s home, authorities discovered three bodies in the basement. Officers noted that it appeared they had all been “brutally assaulted.” Fitzgerald described their clothing as filthy, with one body partially concealed under a rug. The house was reportedly functioning as a boarding home, attracting a flow of guests each day.

Local residents expressed their grief and shock at the incident. Some were saddened but not entirely surprised, noting that the house had seemingly turned into a hub for drug activity. One neighbor described Hamlin as a “good soul who got associated with the wrong kind of people.” This sentiment was echoed by Hamlin’s friends, who hinted that there were worries about potential danger associated with the home.

Another neighbor, Joel Bond, commented, “It seemed like he was creating a safe environment for people to come and use,” emphasizing the tragedy of the situation given Hamlin’s military service.

A family member shared their sorrow, highlighting the bond between Burnett and Hamlin, as they reportedly served together in the Marines.

The police are currently looking for a person of interest, described as a light-skinned black man in his early 30s, around 5 feet 6 inches tall. It remains uncertain whether this individual is the same one who approached officers while they were searching for Hamlin.
