Severe Winter Storm Hits the Northeast, Leaving Three Dead in New York City
A harsh winter storm impacted parts of the South, Midwest, and Northeast, leading to the deaths of three individuals in New York City this past Saturday.
Authorities discovered the victims as temperatures plummeted to around 10 degrees Celsius. Two were found in Brooklyn and one in Manhattan, according to reports from NBC New York.
There were no visible signs of trauma on the bodies, suggesting that the deaths were likely weather-related, officials stated.
Among the victims was a 67-year-old man discovered on a Third Avenue sidewalk, a man in his 30s found on an outdoor staircase on Warren Street, and a woman in her 60s located outside in Canarsie.
Law enforcement officers noted that the deceased have not yet been identified but are presumed to be homeless, with the medical examiner expected to confirm the causes of death.
As temperatures dropped, the city implemented Code Blue Days, designed to encourage homeless individuals to seek shelter. During these days, shelters accept all individuals without the usual entry procedures, and drop-in centers provide 24-hour assistance.
The winter storm, referred to as “Fern,” has affected around 220 million people across various regions in the U.S., creating dangerous conditions of ice and snow, as reported by the Weather Channel.
This prolonged storm is anticipated to cause hazardous travel conditions over the coming days, with significant ice accumulation in southern areas resulting in power outages and damage to trees, according to NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center.
At least 17 states declared emergencies as people braced for the cold weather. News footage captured the severe conditions in Texas, where highways were slick with ice, rendering them nearly empty as residents stayed indoors.
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani confirmed that, as of Saturday evening, at least five fatalities were linked to the extreme weather.
He remarked that while it’s too soon to determine specific causes of death, it highlights the peril that New Yorkers face during harsh winters. Mamdani emphasized the importance of recognizing the risks associated with such weather.
The mayor also mentioned that teams are actively engaging with individuals on the streets, providing shelter options for homeless New Yorkers. He encouraged anyone who sees someone in distress to reach out by calling 311 for assistance.
