Tragic Shooting at WestFest Carnival in Utah
A shooting incident occurred Sunday night at the WestFest Carnival in West Valley City, Utah, around 9:20 PM. Officers on duty noticed two groups of people engaging in a discussion. As they moved in to disperse the crowd, a 16-year-old male from one of the groups drew a firearm and opened fire.
In the aftermath, three individuals were fatally shot. Among the victims was 18-year-old Hassan Lugundy. Authorities also reported that a 41-year-old woman named FNU Reena was killed, along with an 8-month-old boy whose identity has not been disclosed. Notably, the two adult victims did not appear to have any connection to one another.
Alongside the fatalities, police confirmed that two teenagers—a 17-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy—sustained injuries in their arms, although it remains unclear if these individuals were part of the argument that precipitated the shooting.
The suspected shooter, a 16-year-old male, was taken into custody by police for questioning. They specified that while officers engaged the crowds, they did not confront the suspect directly.
Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill remarked that it’s still early in the process to decide if the teenager will face charges as a juvenile or as an adult. “We haven’t evaluated the case yet, and whether it proceeds in juvenile or district court will be determined at the filing stage,” he stated.
This incident took place on the final day of the four-day carnival, which typically features food, music, and rides at Centennial Park. A shocked employee from a nearby business expressed disbelief over the shooting, noting that such events were usually joyous. He mentioned, “It’s definitely an unusual occurrence for this area.” The atmosphere has clearly shifted.
Tragically, a pregnant woman was also injured while trying to escape the scene by climbing over a fence. Local spokesperson Roxeanne Vainuku described the shooting as heartbreaking, highlighting the impact it’s had on the community. “This is something we truly enjoy,” she noted, while emphasizing that it remains unclear if the incident is gang-related. The name of the young suspect has not been released due to his age.
Witnesses have shared their shock, with one stating, “I don’t even know how to explain it tonight. I’m traumatized and honestly, I don’t think I’ll be able to return to the fair anytime soon.” It’s clear this incident will linger in the minds of all those affected.
