Thune may have to consider an unexpected alliance with a leading Democrat if the GOP loses the House.

Potential House Leadership Shift Could Affect Trump’s Presidency

FREMONT, Neb. — A shift in control of the House of Representatives by the Democrats could lead to a significant relationship between the top lawmakers in both chambers of Congress, shaping the final years of President Donald Trump’s administration.

In this scenario, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., would need to collaborate with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., who has been leading the Democrats in the House since 2023.

However, during a recent interview with Fox News Digital on the campaign trail in Nebraska, Thune expressed confidence that such a scenario is unlikely.

THUNE MAKES PREDICTION ON REPUBLICANS’ CHANCES IN SENATE AS GOP FOCUSES ON KEY RACES

“I think, well, that introduces a completely different dynamic,” Thune remarked. “Divided government offers a new incentive structure if you want to accomplish anything. But I’m not assuming that’s where we’ll end up.”

He added, “When it comes down to it, I truly believe we have a strong chance of holding onto both the House and the Senate.”

Election analysts suggest the Senate may remain under Republican control, with seven races marked as toss-ups, according to the Cook Political Report. Meanwhile, the outlook for the House is less clear, as numerous battleground seats appear to be leaning toward the Democrats.

The GOP has maintained a hold on the House since 2022, following a flip during Joe Biden’s presidency. Trump’s waning popularity, showcased by historically low approval ratings, along with ongoing economic challenges, might help Democrats reclaim power.

JOHNSON OPTIMISTIC ABOUT GOP’S MIDTERM OUTLOOK DESPITE DEMOCRATIC CHALLENGE

Jeffries’ office did not respond to inquiries about a potential partnership with Thune should they both win leadership roles.

Historically, the two haven’t had a warm relationship in Congress, often criticizing each other during significant legislative debates. For instance, Thune criticized Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., earlier this year as negotiations over Homeland Security funding faltered, accusing them of being overly cautious and swayed by their party’s left wing.

In response, Jeffries claimed that it was, in fact, Thune who was hesitant during these conflicts. He even accused Thune of attempting to “bluff” his way through negotiations on federal spending amid a government shutdown in 2025.

This isn’t the first instance of divided government; from 2023 to early 2025, Republicans controlled the House while Democrats held a slim majority in the Senate.

SCHUMER NOTES POTENTIAL REPUBLICAN ADVANTAGE IN SENATE CONTROL

According to the Pew Research Center, during that divided Congress, a total of 106 laws were enacted. The current Congress has passed 121 laws so far, including significant legislation like a major housing affordability package, often during prolonged government shutdowns.

Thune is intensely focused on maintaining Republican dominance in the Senate, which was previously under Democratic control until 2024, when Trump and the GOP secured a trifecta in D.C.

As the election on November 3 approaches, he has been traveling extensively, supporting candidates in tight races that could sway the balance of power in the Senate.

REPUBLICAN CONTROL OF SENATE SEEN AS CRUCIAL FOR TRUMP’S AGENDA

Thune contended that ongoing Republican Senate leadership would be crucial for advancing key aspects of Trump’s agenda, such as confirming judicial and executive nominations.

“If we aim for this country to thrive and advance, it’s essential to have a majority in the U.S. Senate to work alongside this president,” Thune emphasized. “And ideally, with a majority in the House as well. I’m committed to doing all I can in the coming weeks to ensure we secure that Senate majority.”
