The incident happened the day after Thanksgiving, after a full day of volunteering and a family dinner. “It doesn’t smell, they sell sodas, there’s alcohol on the walls, they have a frozen food section, and unlike Japanese grocery stores, they actually sell food,” she added.

The video was quickly criticised by social media users, who called Haddish’s response to the store “ignorant” and the video “misguided”.

Critics slammed the comedian as ignorant and insensitive, suggesting her response was misguided.

“I’m an American, and a black person, and for years I’ve been saying that people are starving in Africa and showing pictures of babies with flies in them,” she wrote to X. “I’ve told crazy stories about people killing each other and there being wars every day.”

She also explained that the purpose of her visit to Zimbabwe was to clear up misconceptions and expose the reality of life there.

“I asked my black friends to come with me but they were scared. Then I came here and learned the truth and tears flowed. The media lies. I wanted to share because I know there are Americans who think Africans have nothing.”

“If you had shown the entire video you would have seen that I am saying that I am demystifying the bulls we have been told and shown in America,” she wrote.
