Tiger Woods believes he has ‘the strength’ to pull off a surprise victory at US Open

Tiger Woods, a 15-time major champion, arrived at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina this week ahead of the 2024 U.S. Open.

Golf legend Woods played a practice round on Tuesday with Max Homa and Australian pro Ming Woo Lee, who was also joined by Woods’ 15-year-old son, Charlie.

The last time Woods took to the golf course competitively was last month at Valhalla Golf Club for the PGA Championship.

Woods ultimately missed the cut. The 48-year-old has struggled to compete at a high level since suffering serious injuries in a single-car accident in 2021.

Woods has missed the cut 10 times and withdrawn twice in his last 22 major tournaments, but he played in all four rounds at this year’s Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club, finishing in 60th place.

Despite a string of recent setbacks, Woods seems confident he can overcome adversity and win at Pinehurst.

“I feel like I have the ability to do it,” Woods told reporters on Tuesday. “It’s just a matter of whether I’m going to do it or not. This golf course tests every aspect of your game, especially mentally and the mental discipline it takes to play this golf course. It’s tough.”

Weather conditions in North Carolina will likely be an issue throughout the tournament, but Woods said playing in temperatures in the high 80s to mid 90s Fahrenheit reminded him of the weather he frequently faces in his native Florida.

“It’s going to feel like home,” Woods said. “I deal with the heat and humidity every day at home in Florida, so this is nothing new. It’s just about making sure I stay hydrated and being mindful of the mental toll that the heat is going to take. It’s not just going to hit me, it’s going to hit all of us. It’s going to test everybody.”
