Thursday was baseball’s opening day, but during the game against the Chicago White Sox, things looked to be disastrous for Detroit Tigers manager AJ Hinch.

The White Sox decided to drive the players out to Guaranteed Rate Field.

Hinch told reporters Saturday before the second game of the season that he almost got hit by a car.

“It was a close game,” Hinch said, via MLive.com. “They have priority, obviously. Next time I’ll let them drive through.”

Photos on social media showed the vehicle circling the warning truck and down the third base line. It’s unclear how close the vehicle got to Hinch.

The Tigers got off to a strong start heading into 2024 with two straight wins.

On Saturday, Carson Kelly hit scoring singles in the seventh and 10th innings and Detroit defeated Chicago 7-6 in overtime. Mark Canha and Riley Green also hit home runs during the game.

“We want to play for bigger things. We want to go to the playoffs and we want to go win,” Kelly said after the game. “Obviously, we have to win to get there…close games, and I think that’s what we’re going to go out there and prove.”

Hinch is in his fourth season with the Tigers. He led Detroit to improvement from 2022 to 2023 with a 78-84 record.
