Tigers Executive Resigns in Scandal Over Inappropriate Photo Allegations

Sam Mentsin has stepped down as the assistant general manager of the Tigers, resigning on Thursday just prior to being dismissed for inappropriate behavior at work.

While the team did not disclose specific details, Athletic reported that Mentsin had sent unsolicited explicit images to two former female staff members at the organization.

In a report with the outlet, two women who were part of the team alleged that a once-esteemed baseball executive had transmitted unsettling photos of his genitals through the social media application Snapchat.

A third woman, who worked in Major League Baseball but not with the Tigers, told Athletic that between 2018 and 2019, Mentsin sent an unsolicited message of his genitals on the same platform.

“Upon learning of the allegations concerning Sam Mentsin’s conduct, the club promptly completed its investigation,” the Tigers stated to the outlet. “He resigned before the conclusion of our action against Mr. Menzin. Such behavior contradicts our standards and has absolutely no place in our organization. We are committed to maintaining a positive and secure culture for our coworkers and continue to stress respect, inclusivity, and professionalism.”

As reported, Danny Rosengard, a business associate in Tigers Compliance and Research, had reached out to the woman last week, as he did previously, to check whether she had received an inappropriate message from Menzin.

Mentsin informed Athletic that he stepped down from his position as he was seeking a change in his career and returned to New York to address “family matters.”

The former staff member had been with the Tigers organization for 13 years, starting as an intern in baseball operations in 2012 before rising to the assistant general manager role.

The current baseball executive has also interned with the Mets and worked with player agency Turner Gary Sports.

When questioned about the delayed reporting of the allegations, one woman expressed doubt that anyone would believe her.

“When Sam Mentsin admits to this, who would believe that?” said the individual. “It’s not like saying a bat boy or security guard did it; it’s Sam Mentsin,” she added, noting the scarcity of women in the front office.

The Tigers have recently acknowledged the allegations, The Detroit Free Press reported that Menzin resigned shortly after the claims surfaced.
