According to a recent article from ESPN, there’s growing buzz that the American League player, who has clinched the Cy Young Award two years in a row, might be traded. This speculation emerged from the insights gathered at the recent Winter Conference held in Orlando.

Jon Heyman of the newspaper noted that some insiders think the 29-year-old Skubal could be on the move, especially with just one year left on his contract before he likely becomes eligible for a record-setting pitching deal in MLB history.

Earlier in the season, there was ambiguity about whether the Tigers were even considering such a move with Skubal. However, the atmosphere appears to be shifting, particularly following comments made by Detroit’s baseball executive, Scott Harris, during the conference.

“I don’t subscribe to the idea of untouchable players,” Harris stated on MLB Network. “This isn’t specifically about Tariq. It’s more about our overall strategy to build a winning franchise. My role is to enhance this organization, which means being open to possibilities, even if they seem unlikely. It’s essential for us to keep improving.”

“While we may not have all the answers right now, we’ve achieved significant success in a short period. I feel confident about our bright future, and our approach has made that possible.”

It seems that the Tigers are considering trading Skubal this offseason, particularly since they could otherwise lose him, receiving only draft pick compensation.

Heyman previously mentioned a considerable $250 million gap between Skubal’s expectations and what Detroit is willing to offer. If the Tigers want to retain him, a substantial shift in their strategy will be necessary.

Detroit has shown potential to be a significant player in free agency, but if they aim to compete with teams like the Mets, Dodgers, and Yankees next winter, closing that gap is critical.

Trading Skubal could be seen as a wise decision, as it’s likely that the return in a trade would exceed the draft picks they’d get if they didn’t retain him. There’s talk that the Mets might be a frontrunner for offering a competitive package for Skubal, although the Dodgers also seem very focused on acquisitions right now.

It’s logical to assume the team most eager to acquire Skubal will likely also be willing to negotiate an extension that could surpass the $325 million record set for non-dual pitchers.

Skubal would undoubtedly elevate any team’s performance. His track record over the last two years includes a 31-10 win-loss record alongside a 2.30 ERA across 62 starts, while striking out 469 batters in 387 1/3 innings.

Harris, while discussing trades, emphasized the importance of all the players in the locker room working collectively towards the postseason. “I can’t speculate on trades involving players from my home country; that wouldn’t be fair to anyone involved. We’ve got 25 guys focused on this season, and every detail counts in making that postseason push,” he remarked. “Tariq is a Tiger, and we’re excited about his contributions to our team.”
