Kevin McGonigle Joins Detroit Tigers’ Opening Day Roster

One of baseball’s rising stars has made the leap to the major leagues.

Kevin McGonigle, a highly regarded prospect, has secured a spot on the Detroit Tigers’ Opening Day roster following a standout spring training, as the team announced recently.

At just 21 years old, McGonigle, a shortstop, has been highlighted in scouting reports as “likely the best hitting prospect of the 2020s.” He entered the spring as one of baseball’s top talents, ranking as the second most promising player according to MLB Pipeline.

He made quite the impression, packing his bags with a locker assignment at Comerica Park.

During the spring exhibition games in Florida, McGonigle batted .250 with a .923 OPS, registering two homers, ten hits, and eight RBIs across 20 games. He even showcased some standout plays on the field.

However, he may face some challenges starting for the Tigers in their season opener against the Padres, especially when sharing the field with legends like Hall of Famers Ty Cobb, Al Kaline, and Alan Trammell, all of whom played in season openers before turning 22.

Remarkably, he’ll be the youngest member on the Tigers’ opening day lineup since 21-year-old Omar Infante played at shortstop in 2003.

Detroit picked McGonigle with the 37th selection in the 2023 draft, ahead of the No. 3 overall pick, Max Clark, who’s currently ranked as the 10th best prospect by MLB Pipeline.

The lefty quickly advanced through the minor leagues, kicking off the 2025 season at low-A Lakeland before advancing to Double-A Erie, posting a .919 OPS and hitting 12 home runs in 46 games with the Seawolves.

He even earned the 2025 Arizona Fall League MVP title after achieving an impressive 1.210 OPS with five homers in just 19 games.

The Tigers are counting on McGonigle to address a noticeable gap at shortstop, as the team ranked 22nd in wRC+ and 24th in fWAR in 2025.
