Tight race for Solomon and McGreevy in Jersey City mayoral election: latest poll

Jersey City Mayoral Race Tightens

The race for mayor in Jersey City is getting close, with local councilor James Solomon making significant gains against former governor Jim McGreevey. Recent data from an Impact Research poll indicates that Solomon has jumped ten points ahead of McGreevey, increasing his support from 16% to 26% within the past year.

In contrast, McGreevey’s support has dipped. As of August, he is reported to have 27% of the vote. This sets the stage for a very tight competition between two Democrats, just months ahead of the November election.

Polls indicate that many voters are still undecided.

Solomon’s campaign manager, Stuart Thomas, expressed confidence in Solomon’s rising popularity, stating that this is a change election, emphasizing that Solomon represents true change for the city. “James is laser-focused on addressing critical issues like housing affordability and the overall cost of living. We’re committed to pursuing these topics all the way to November,” he noted.

Additionally, Solomon’s name recognition has soared over the past year, with about 73% of voters now familiar with him, compared to just 45% a year ago. Meanwhile, McGreevey’s past scandals continue to shadow his campaign. Approximately 43% of surveyed individuals view him positively, whereas 44% hold a negative impression.

McGreevey’s return to politics is notable, especially given his resignation in 2004 following an extramarital affair with a male staffer. The current mayor, Stephen Flop, has chosen not to seek reelection, likely to throw his support behind McGreevey.
