Tillis Rejects Trump, States Disagreement with D.C. Attorney Nominee Ed Martin

Senator Tom Tillis (R-NC) has publicly declared that he will not support Donald Trump’s nomination for a critical legal position in the District of Columbia, just hours after Trump urged him to back the candidate.

This decision, initially reported by various sources, signals potential challenges for Trump’s candidate, Ed Martin, ahead of Tillis’s confirmation announcement.

Reports indicate that Tillis withholding his support could significantly hinder Martin’s nomination from moving forward in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Without Tillis’s backing, Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) might decide not to advance the nomination.

Tillis’s office did not respond to inquiries regarding his decision either late Monday or Tuesday morning.

However, Tillis mentioned that many of his concerns revolved around the events of January 6th during comments to reporters, including those from CNN.

“We need to be clear that what occurred on January 6th was unacceptable,” said Tillis.

This stance contradicts Trump’s position, who has shown leniency towards individuals involved in those events.

Just hours before Tillis made his announcement, Trump had called on senators to support Martin’s appointment, labeling it as essential for the country’s recovery.

“Ed Martin will be a key player in that effort, and I hope Republican senators will back his nomination. When you look back at your vote for Ed Martin, you’ll be proud of your contribution to America,” Trump stated.

Tillis’s opposition could potentially derail the nomination entirely.

Sources suggest that Trump still hopes Tillis may reconsider his stance as he seeks re-election. However, Martin’s temporary position is set to expire on May 20, 2025.

Considering the Senate’s legislative schedule, Grassley would need to proceed with the nomination markup by midnight Tuesday for Martin’s appointment to be addressed before his interim role ends.

Without Tillis’s support, it looks like Martin’s nomination may not survive, which could significantly undermine Trump’s agenda.
