Tim Allen Explores Paul's Views on Law and Sin on Bill Maher's Podcast

Tim Allen, known for his role in Home Improvement, recently shared his insights on studying the writings of the Apostle Paul, focusing on Paul’s idea that laws exist to highlight humanity’s sins.

During an appearance on Bill Maher’s podcast, Allen discussed Paul’s notion that “laws were essentially created to promote sin” and serve as “guardrails for how the world operates.”

“Paul said something very intuitive, which I’m still learning; he mentioned the law was really established to shape sin,” the 72-year-old comedian remarked. “Without laws, we wouldn’t even know what constitutes a crime. So, the laws essentially provided a framework about the world’s nature.”

He noted that this perspective contrasted with his previous engagement in philosophical thought, which he found unsatisfying.

“What we’re facing is a cycle of philosophical ignorance,” he stated. “That’s been my experience for the last two decades. Philosophy tends to go around in circles, and honestly, it fails to explain much at all.”

Allen also recalled a trip to Jerusalem, where a tour guide pointed out locations linked to Jesus.

“Out of the blue, the guide said, ‘And that’s where Jesus walked.’ You think, wow, I had no clue that guy was a real person,” Allen recounted.

“Well, maybe he isn’t,” Maher interjected.

“That’s not what the guide says,” Allen responded, noting the guide’s assertion of Jesus’ historical existence, describing him as “probably the strongest, most powerful Jew of all time.”

Last June, after beginning to read the New Testament, Allen expressed being “astounded” by Paul’s letter to the Romans.

“I finished the Old Testament. It’s an incredible experience when the words and their meanings click. This week, I’m diving into the Gospel of Paul, a Roman Jew who knew about Plato, Stoicism, and other Greek philosophies. Page 7 really impacted me!” he shared at that time.

Earlier in February, Allen mentioned he had completed reading the Old Testament and was, in fact, revisiting it simultaneously.

“I wrapped it up after nearly a year. Reading the entire Old Testament, taking my time to absorb it, was a humbling and profound journey. Truly, what a treasure,” he reflected.
