Giants Adjust to Loss of Malik Nabors

After Malik Nabors was sidelined for the season, the Giants made a pivotal shift to enhance their tight end performance, focusing on Theo Johnson and Daniel Bellinger.

This change stemmed from Mike Kafka’s confidence in Tim Kelly. As Kafka stepped into his new role as interim head coach, he elevated Kelly from tight ends coach to offensive coordinator, marking a significant development in their collaboration. Kafka will retain play-calling responsibilities.

“Tim is a detail-oriented coach,” Kafka mentioned. “He knows the system inside and out and is a close friend. He fits perfectly with our needs.”

Kelly brings four years of offensive coordinator experience, having worked with both the Texans and Titans, three of which he was the play caller.

Since he joined the Giants in 2024, Kelly primarily concentrated on running strategies, but he plans to broaden his involvement beginning with this Sunday’s game against the Packers. He noted, “I’ll be more integrated into the overall game plan to help ease some of Kafka’s planning stress. We’ll fine-tune everything together; he’ll know exactly what we want.”

In his second NFL season, Johnson has emerged as the Giants’ second-best pass catcher and has proven to be a valuable asset in the red zone with five touchdowns. Bellinger’s role has expanded significantly since Nabors’ ACL injury, averaging around 40 offensive snaps per game.

Bellinger expressed satisfaction with Kelly’s communication, stating, “We appreciate how he breaks things down and offers insights into the defense as we work on our offensive game.”

Kafka opted for Kelly over quarterbacks coach Shay Tierney and wide receivers coach Mike Groh, both of whom were part of the previous coaching staff.

Kelly commented on the upcoming changes, “Most alterations will probably occur behind the scenes regarding planning. Players might hear my voice more, but the vision stays the same.”

He humorously remarked that he would be losing some sleep balancing the role of tight ends coach with overseeing the offense.

Last week, the Giants had a chance to claim victory against the Bears. However, two failed runs inside the 2-yard line forced them to settle for a field goal, resulting in a lost 10-point lead in the fourth quarter.

“We need to be more consistent as a unit,” Kelly emphasized. “There are times when we can be unstoppable, but it’s equally important to recognize when we need to push harder.”

As Kafka navigates his new head coaching responsibilities—including timeouts and fourth-down decisions—Kelly looks forward to strategizing for Sunday’s game, constantly contemplating ways to score. “I’m always considering what can bring points on the board,” he stated, “and what’s likely to unfold in the next series.”
