North Carolina Representative Tim Moore shared a video revealing a hidden tunnel beneath the US Capitol, which has an entrance from Lincoln’s room. This room, once used as a post office during President Abraham Lincoln’s tenure, has drawn interest, according to a report.
In his post on the social media platform X, the Republican leader invited viewers, stating, “Come with me to see one of Capitol’s hidden secrets!” He expressed his fondness for Lincoln’s room, noting, “When President Lincoln was home, he would sit by the fireplace here and read letters, but the most intriguing aspect is what lies beneath the floorboards.”
He continued, “You can see there are passages; these were old stairs that got closed off. Believe it or not, I actually made my way down through this hole,” he said, reflecting on the history of the space.
Moore mentioned that the construction of this hidden area began in the 1700s and emphasized that the Capitol is filled with secret corridors. Regarding the tunnel, he added, “I can’t confirm this… but it’s rumored to be one of the routes British soldiers used when they invaded the Capitol in 1814 during their attack on Washington.” The video footage also showcased signatures from lawmakers and others who marked their presence in these historical passages.
According to Moore, the secret tunnel leads out of the Capitol. At the time of its initial construction, the House of Representatives convened in the statue hall, which now features notable American statues and is located next to Lincoln’s room.
President George Washington initiated the Capitol’s construction in 1793, but it was only finalized in 1826 after being set ablaze by British forces during the War of 1812.
