Potential Candidates for Lindsey Graham’s Senate Seat

With the passing of Senator Lindsey Graham, Republicans overseeing Senate funding and candidate support are considering two main individuals for the special election happening on August 11. Senator Tim Scott has received inquiries from various former and current politicians interested in running, but he’s been notably vocal about one name: former Representative Trey Gowdy.

During a recent event in memory of Graham, Scott expressed his fondness for Gowdy. “This might be unexpected, but I really appreciate Trey Gowdy,” he mentioned.

Graham’s death has initiated a competitive race for the Senate seat, with Trump hinting that he may already have a preferred candidate.

Scott believes Gowdy would excel as a senator for South Carolina, though he noted that Gowdy might have some personal commitments—like alimony concerns—that could complicate his considerations. “I would like to engage with him more. And just to clarify, he is happily married,” Scott added.

After retiring from the House in 2019—following a significant tenure highlighted by his investigation into the Benghazi attacks—Gowdy has become a familiar face on FOX News. Scott is confident that Gowdy’s extensive congressional experience, particularly in areas similar to Graham’s focus, would be beneficial. With a background in prosecution and foreign policy, Gowdy could be an asset in the Senate Judiciary Committee, especially in selecting a new Supreme Court justice should that opportunity arise.

“I think he could be an exceptional representative,” Scott stated, further affirming, “I truly believe that’s the case.” He went on to say, “I can’t imagine anyone better to represent South Carolina than Trey Gowdy. But, he seems hesitant. I’m working on getting him interested in the position.”

There’s also mention of Rep. Russell Fry, whom Trump has indicated will play a significant role in the special election discussions. Scott noted Fry’s connection to the White House should not be overlooked. Fry has been in touch with the administration regarding his potential candidacy, which might come as no surprise to anyone following the situation closely.

Interestingly, Scott also pointed out another possible candidate—his sister, Sen. Darling Graham, who is currently fulfilling the remainder of her brother’s term. “Honestly, she seems to be doing quite well so far,” he commented. “So, why not her?”
