Tim Sheehy Backs Bill to Prevent National Guardsmen Being Deployed to Fight in Foreign Wars

Montana Republican Senate candidate and former Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy has endorsed the “Protect the National Guard” movement, which would prevent National Guard troops from being deployed to fight in foreign wars unless war is formally declared by Congress under the Constitution.

“We’re not going to let it go,” Sheehy said of state Rep. Lee Deming, R-S.C., who sponsored the bill. Obey security laws The governor of Big Sky Country said he supports the bill “100 percent,” which essentially would prohibit the state’s National Guard from being deployed to fight in a foreign war unless war is formally declared by Congress.

In support of a nationwide “Defense of the Guard” movement, Sheehy said the Constitution only requires the existence of a Navy and that the U.S. built a “vast military-industrial complex” during the Cold War.

Sheehy said the purpose of Deming’s bill is to prevent the Defense Department from treating National Guard units as “a separate branch of the federal military.”

“And in fact, it’s unconstitutional,” Sheehy said, saying the US should not send troops overseas except for very specific counter-terrorism operations. He also noted that the US has not formally declared war since World War II.

Liam McCollum, an activist with the Montana Libertarian Party, reportedly sent the letter. Featured Many libertarians and anti-war activists have called on former President Donald Trump to support the Guard Defence Act.

Donald Trump should support the National Guard defense movement and defend his support for the following reasons: To appeal to libertarians, he can say that he puts “America First” and is against wars not declared by Congress under Article I, Section 8, Section 11 of the Constitution. To appeal to Republicans, he can say that he believes the National Guard should perform its prescribed function under Article I, Section 8, Section 15 of the Constitution to stop “invasion” at the border, rather than engage in endless wars.

If Trump is re-elected, he has the opportunity to change the course of American history for the better and prevent Washington from becoming the centralized empire the Founding Fathers feared.

The letter also points out that supporting Defend the Guard is another way to garner libertarian support, especially in a libertarian-leaning state like Montana, and that the Montana Republican Party has become the sixth state Republican Party to adopt Defend the Guard language.

Key signatories of the letter include Joe Kent, Republican candidate for Washington’s 3rd District, former Congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul, and Dan McKnight, chairman of Bring Our Troops Home.

Libertarian National Committee Chair Angela McArdle wrote Saturday that Montana libertarians met with Sheehy and Trump to discuss military defense and foreign policy.

Recent polls have Sheehy leading by six points over Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.).
