Tim Walz asks Trump to come to Minnesota during ICE conflict and federal immigration disagreement

Minnesota Governor Invites Trump Amid Immigration Tensions

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz extended an invitation to President Donald Trump on Tuesday, inviting him to visit the state to “see our values in action.” This comes amid ongoing discussions about the role of federal immigration agents in Minneapolis.

In a statement shared on X, Walz expressed, “Mr. President, Minnesota, please see our values in action. We invite you to see how communities from all walks of life are working together and how the spirit of this state refuses to be defined by fearful division.” He further urged Trump to join local leaders in restoring peace and underscoring that genuine public safety is founded on trust and mutual respect.

This invitation contrasts sharply with Walz’s earlier comments criticizing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for what he described as their overreach. He labeled the current uptick in enforcement as “a war being waged against Minnesota.” The background of this invitation involves federal agents actively pursuing criminal illegal immigrants, clashing with protesters who argue that such actions hinder law enforcement from capturing undocumented individuals accused of serious offenses, like murder.

Walz, along with local Democratic officials including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, expressed discontent over these federal operations, calling on Trump to retract federal authorities. Earlier this month, Walz remarked on a significant operational shift, indicating that many individuals were unwilling to cooperate due to heightened surveillance.

Interestingly, Walz had previously urged Trump to “lower the temperature” following Trump’s threats to invoke the Insurrection Act in response to the unrest in Minnesota. In the ensuing exchange, the White House criticized Walz’s rhetoric as protective of criminal illegal immigrants.

The situation further escalated when Walz, Frey, and others received grand jury subpoenas related to claims of conspiring to obstruct ICE operations. Walz has publicly denounced the Justice Department’s inquiry into the recent shooting of Renee Goode by an ICE agent, describing it as a “partisan distraction.”

Highlighting community concerns, Walz expressed that many Minnesotans are feeling unsafe, with kids anxious about attending school and local businesses threatened by ICE actions. He voiced sorrow over Goode’s death, advocating for accountability rather than political retribution. “Those responsible have yet to be held accountable,” he said, suggesting that the federal focus should shift towards rebuilding trust and lawful order instead of engaging in political disputes.
