Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, a Democrat, seems to be expressing some concern after President Donald Trump referred to him as “severely retarded,” which raises questions about the standards applied to different figures, especially given Trump’s past comments.
Background
During a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, President Trump shifted focus to criticize the situation in Somalia, alleging fraud within Minnesota’s Somali community and targeting Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota.
“This is just one more of those mean comments,” he stated. “Somalia is hardly a country. They have nothing and just run around fighting among themselves. There’s no order there.”
Somalia, found at the eastern edge of Africa, is a predominantly Sunni Muslim nation with a population exceeding 19 million. Unfortunately, it grapples with high rates of female genital mutilation, a GDP of approximately 12.94 billion dollars, and a literacy rate of only 54%.
This nation ranks quite high in crime and terrorism, occupying the 34th position out of 193 nations on the Global Organized Crime Index. It has a human trafficking score of 8.5, reflecting the seriousness of such issues.
Trump suggested that some of Somalia’s longstanding challenges might have crossed over when the U.S. accepted refugees from the country. Recently, President Trump announced plans to revoke the Temporary Protected Status for Somalia amid allegations of fraud affecting the Somali community.
He stated, “Billions of dollars have been drained from that country annually. They aren’t contributing anything back. They’re heavily reliant on welfare. Honestly, we don’t want them here. Some may call this politically incorrect, but I don’t care. Their country is in ruins, and we’re not looking to import this into the U.S.”
He remarked, “We’re at a critical juncture. I’m not sure if people will heed my words, but I’m saying it. If we continue to let in trash, we’ll head in the wrong direction.”
Moreover, he directly attacked Ilhan Omar, labeling her “trash,” claiming that those involved with her aren’t contributing positively.
Walz Responds
In response on Thursday, Walz condemned Trump’s remarks and urged public backlash against them.
“I believe it’s unprecedented for an American president to call Somalia ‘trash’ and Minnesota ‘hell,'” he remarked, even while he himself has been somewhat selective in his criticisms over time.
It’s worth noting that past presidents, including Joe Biden, have also used derogatory terms toward groups of people. Walz himself previously minimized Biden’s remarks about a significant portion of the electorate last year.
In an incident in October 2024, Biden echoed a comedian’s joke about Puerto Rico during a speech at a Trump rally, which directly referenced “trash,” leading to a back-and-forth about unity within the Democratic camp.
Walz noted that Trump’s use of derogatory terms is particularly harmful, stating, “Such language dehumanizes whole communities based on ethnicity and race, a troubling trend we never thought we’d see here.”
Walz asserted that Minnesota officials failing to denounce Trump’s “despicable comments” are complicit in endorsing him.
Tim Walz attempts to mislead Americans again, this time regarding Trump’s ‘garbage’ comment.
